Chalk Pastel Portrait- Semester 1, 2018
For my chalk pastel portrait, I drew Chadwick Boseman. The constraints used were; large drawing paper (18"x 24"), chalk pastels, blenders and reference photo. Although I didn't use the complimentary color of green (mainly because I didn't want the background to be red), I did use orange to compliment his darker skin.
For this project, I started out with a small sketch so I could get the measurements correct, and then I drew him larger to match the drawing paper. After I felt comfortable with my drawing, I started to color in with the chalks, leaving out the places where there are shadows and highlights and focused on that last. Challenges that I faced during this project was getting the shadows and measurements correct. It was super daunting to see extremely dark places next to lighter ones (it looked unnatural to me) so I really concentrated on making it look more natural and blended. |
